Greetings from the President
Thank you for your interest in the Norwegian National League of Chicago (NNL). We hope our web site helps you learn more about us, our member organizations and their events; as well as the events of other Scandinavian groups in the Chicagoland area.
We are the “umbrella” organization for many of the area’s Norwegian-American organizations and sponsor scholarships and three events during the year. Our main event is the Syttende Mai (17th of May) celebration with a banquet and a parade honoring the signing of the Norwegian constitution in 1814. Additionally we have a Leif Erikson celebration where we lay a wreath at the statue of Leif Erikson in October, and present a program as part of “Christmas Around the World” at the Museum of Science and Industry in December.
It is gratifying each year to see so many participating in and enjoying the Syttende Mai celebration made possible by the truly appreciated time and generosity of our small band of volunteers. Our colorful parade of bunads and flags is made more enjoyable with the addition of entertainment such as the Medinah Big Wheels, and especially music.
Many have asked about the cost of the parade and how it is funded.
The parade event, which includes park entertainment, totals $6,000 - $8,000. This amount covers insurance for the day, facilities, city fees, parade groups, and in particular music. People are often surprised to learn that bands are paid to participate in the parade. We strive to include 3 bands and this does have a cost of about $2,500.
Funding is achieved through the sale of program book advertisements/greetings, sales at our table in Hodges Park during the parade, and private donations. I encourage you to browse our website, learn more about NNL and learn how to help with our effort to continue the 17 de mai celebration in the coming years. You can now donate directly from our web site using Paypal and popular credit cards. Any amount $10 and more will be appreciated,
The Norwegian National League
